New Quartersawn White Oak!

A Fresh Look

Lately, painted wood door styles have taken the spotlight (we’re looking at you, white Shaker), but the popularity of beautiful, stained wood has never diminished. We’re excited to introduce Quartersawn White Oak as our newest premium wood species. Why do we love it?

It’s quartersawn. Because of the way the boards are cut from the log, the grain is tight and straight, and embellished with striking patterns of flecks and rays. (See below for the sawyer’s take on quartersawn.)

It’s versatile. QSWO embraces styles from an ornate traditional door to a craftsman Shaker door to a minimalist slab door.

It has staying power. QSWO has been appreciated since fine woodwork and furniture in the arts-and-crafts styles of the early 20th century.

It’s excellent for cabinetry. Wood cabinet doors can expand and contract with changes in heat and humidity. Because of its tight, straight grain, QSWO is stable, consistent, and rigid. It resists cupping, twisting, contracting, expanding, and penetrable moisture.

Dress it up!

Quartersawn White Oak is available in twenty-seven different door styles, and six of our most popular designer-selected stain colors. You can also add a little distressing, Aged and Worn Specialty Finishes, for a little history. It’s premium, so it’s available only on our All-Plywood box.

Here’s How The Sawyer Sees It

Quartersawn has to do with how boards are cut from the log. A plain-sawn board can intercept the tree rings almost parallel creating the dramatic “cathedral” graining associated with our Red Oak doors. Quartersawn logs are first cut into quarters, then sliced into boards to capture the rings almost perpendicular each time. This is why the grain is tight and straight, and it’s the only way to reveal the desirable flecks and rays. The tight, straight grain is responsible for the board’s rigid structure and resistance to heat and humidity.

Quartersawn White Oak is available to order now. We can’t wait to see what you create with it!
